The Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA) is the animal health research program of Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA), its hosting institution. IRTA is a research institute owned by the Government of Catalonia (Spain) ascribed to the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food (DARP), which is also a CERCA institute.
CReSA activity is executed at the Edifici CReSA, which is a technologically advanced building, with conventional laboratories as well as biocontainment with level-3 biosafety (BSL-3) laboratories and animal facilities. CReSA is located within the campus of the UAB (Barcelona, Spain).
CReSA together with the BSL3 infrastructure of Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal (CISA-INIA), configures the so-called Red de Laboratorios de Alta Seguridad Biológica (RLASB, www.rlasb.es , High Biological Security Laboratories Network). The RLASB is a singular scientific and technological infrastructure (ICTS) of the Spanish Government. CReSA is also participating in the Red de Laboratorios de Alerta Biológica (RE-LAB, Biological Alert Laboratory Network), at Spanish level, and is one of the corner-stones of animal disease surveillance for the Catalan government. Recently, CReSA has been recognized as OIE Collaborating Centre for research and control for emerging and re-emerging swine diseases in Europe and OIE Reference Centre for Classical Swine Fever.
The research at CReSA is being performed under the umbrella of three major activities: basic and applied independent research based on national and international projects (organized in 3 research subprograms on epidemiology and risk assessment, endemic diseases and transboundary diseases), services for public administrations and research contracts with agri-food sector companies.
